Hearing Matters Australia – a volunteer based consumer organization
(Formerly Self Help for Hard of Hearing)
Hearing Matters Australia (HMA) is made up of volunteers, many of whom have first hand, lived experience of hearing loss. That experience enables us to to offer support that is backed up by knowledge gained and personal experience.
Hearing loss is common, occurring in more than one in six in our community.
Our volunteers have lived experience of hearing loss – individuals, partners, family and friends experience communication difficulties that can result from unaddressed hearing loss.
There is much that can be done to address the consequences of hearing loss – starting with effective communication strategies by individuals and those they communicate with, using appropriate technology, accepting and adjusting to the fact that hearing has changed. Sharing our lived experience is what enables us to support Australians who are deaf and hard of hearing.
